Popis

This publication, which includes a 72-item catalogue, explores 19th-century sheet music printed in Prague, drawing on examples from the collection of the Music Department of the National Library of the Czech Republic. An introductory essay provides a brief overview of this collection and its history. A chapter titled „The musical life of 19th century Prague as reflected in the locally published sheet music“ examines the musical repertoire of the era, while the subsequent text reveals how the Czech cultural elite perceived this repertoire and the associated publishing practices. Further chapters are dedicated to music printing techniques and individual Prague publishers. The essays are supplemented by reproductions of musical scores and references to specific printed editions, which are presented—along with detailed commentary—in the exhibition catalogue that follows. This volume—also available in a Czech edition titled …papír and olovo… Hudebniny vydané tiskem v Praze v 19. století ze sbírky hudebního oddělení Národní knihovny České republiky—concludes with the bibliography, the English summary, and the index of names.
