Modráková, Renáta: Time has laid its attire aside: fashion in manuscripts from the 11th–16th centuries
310 Kč
The prestigious publication, released in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at the Klementinum Gallery (Prague, 2008), explores fashion from the 11th to the 16th century through examples from illuminated manuscripts held in the collections of the National Library of the Czech Republic.
Popis
The author traces the evolution of clothing among various social strata and groups in Europe—and particularly in the Bohemian lands—from the 11th century to the end of the 16th century. The scope ranges from monarchs, the nobility, and the clergy to burghers, artisans, and warriors (including the Hussites), as well as peasants and those on the fringes of society; male and female attire are described separately, and a dedicated chapter focuses on children. Shifts in fashion trends are illustrated through literary excerpts and numerous color reproductions from 31 illuminated manuscripts held by the National Library of the Czech Republic. This impressive volume—also available in a Czech edition titled Čas odložil svůj šat—concludes with the glossary of terms, the list of manuscripts used, and the bibliography.
